When to apply pre-emergent in zone 7 (exact timing guide)
Pre-emergent herbicide is the single most effective tool against crabgrass, but timing is everything. Apply too early and it breaks down before crabgrass germinates. Apply too late and the weed is already growing underground.
The soil temperature rule
Pre-emergent should go down when soil temperature at a 4-inch depth reaches 55 degrees Fahrenheit consistently for 3-5 days. In zone 7, this typically happens between mid-March and mid-April. Check your local soil temperature at greencastonline.com or push a meat thermometer 4 inches into the soil in a sunny spot.
Split application strategy
Most products provide 8-12 weeks of protection. Crabgrass germinates from late spring through mid-summer. Plan two applications: first when soil hits 55 degrees, second 8-10 weeks later. This covers April through July.
Best products for zone 7
Prodiamine (Barricade) is the gold standard — lasts longer with a wider application window. Dithiopyr (Dimension) is the runner-up and can stop crabgrass that has already germinated up to the 1-tiller stage. Avoid combo products with fertilizer unless you actually need both at the same time.
Critical mistakes
Do not aerate after applying — it punches holes through the barrier. Do not apply within 60 days of overseeding. If you plan to seed in September, your last application should be no later than early July.
